MURRAY WELCOMES EARTH HOUR 2010

23 MARCH 2010
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MURRAY WELCOMES EARTH HOUR 2010

Dumfries MSP Elaine Murray is encouraging constituents and businesses to sign up to the WWF’s Earth Hour and show world leaders they are committed to fighting climate change.

On Saturday 27 March at 8:30pm WWF want a billion people to switch off their lights for one hour to send a message that they care for the future of the planet. Iconic landmarks around the world will also be plunged into darkness, including Big Ben, the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and the pyramids of Giza.

Elaine Murray MSP said: "Climate change is an issue of such scale and magnitude it can sometimes be difficult to know what we can do as individuals. WWF’s Earth Hour is a tremendous display of hope for the future as almost a billion people will show they care about climate change. It sends a message across the world that we care about the future of the planet and can work together to make a difference when it really matters.

"The past year has not been easy. With the disappointment of the UN Summit in Copenhagen and the continued rumblings surrounding the science of climate change, it has sometimes felt as if we’ve been diverted off course.

"Earth Hour is a great way for us all to show world leaders that we’re still watching and demanding action. The issue is so huge that it will only be solved if we tackle it together and that means us all taking our own responsibility seriously.

"Please sign up to Earth Hour by going to www.wwfscotland.org.uk/earthhour and show the world that Dumfries and Galloway is ready to be at the forefront of the fight against climate change."
