19 MARCH 2010 IMMEDIATE RELEASE HOUSING REGENERATION SCHEME WELCOMED Dumfries MSP Elaine Murray has welcomed the start of a £77m regeneration scheme to demolish and replace 170 former council houses, but highlights the importance that the living conditions of nearby residents are not compromised. The first phase will see flats knocked down at Babbington Crescent in the Lochside area of Dumfries. Elaine Murray MSP said: “I’m pleased this project has got underway and tenants will soon be able to move into new, high quality housing. “The housing problem in Dumfries has been made even more acute during these projects as tenants have been moved out to make way for building work. Once this project is completed I hope it will ease a little. “However, I remain very concerned about the future of housing stock in Dumfries and Galloway as the SNP’s swinging cuts to housing budgets have put future developments at serious risk. “It is also important that during these works the rights of neighbouring residents are protected. DGHP must limit disturbance to neighbours and continue to meet and communicate to ensure living conditions are not compromised as the building takes place.“ ENDS CONTACT - ANDREW MACKENZIE 07769206856
